Eid prayer

Eid prayer is the special prayer done on the occasions of the two eid (celebrations) in Islam - Eid Al-Adhha (or Bakrid - the festival of sacrifice) and Eid-al-Fitr (festival after Ramadan). It is recommended to wear new clothes for the occasion.

Eid is normally offered outdoors in an open field. If it is wet or raining, or no suitable place is available then it can be prayed in a mosque or a large hall.

Time of Eid prayer:
Eid prayer is offered when the sun appears over the horizon. Normally it is prayed a while after the Fajr prayer.

How to perform Eid prayer:
Eid prayer is two rakats. No Azan or Iqamat is required for Eid prayer. There is no nafl prayer before or after the Eid prayer either.

The people gather in the field early and chant the following glorification till the Eid prayer starts:

ALLahu akbar, ALLahu akbar, ALLahu akbar, ALLahu akbar, laa ilaaha illaLLa. Allahu akbar, ALLahu akbar, walillaahil-hamd

In fact this glorification is done in mosques even from the previous night onwards, and may be continued after every congregational prayer for the next three days.

The conduct of Eid prayer is special in that that instead of one there are seven Takbeers in the first Rakat and 5 in the second Rakat (including the opening ones), done one after the other continuously, before starting the recitations of Fathiha and from the Quran. (For each Takbeer the hands should be raised to the ear level and then tie them below the chest as in the first Takbeer). In any case if the number of Takbeers go wrong by forgetfulness it doesn't affect the prayer. The recitation is done aloud by the Imam. After the recitation the Imam delivers a speech, after which the people disperse.
