What is Tawassul?

Tawassul is a key word in Islamic lexicon. It occurs in Quran, Sunnah (the traditions) of the prophet and in ancient Arabic poetry and prose.

Its meaning is "To draw near to what one seeks after and to approach that which one desires."

In the religious context it means "seeking a means of nearness to Allah"

Waasil is the one who desires to draw nearer to Allah, and Waseelah is nearness and a means to Him.

Quran exhorts: "O ye who believe! Do your duty to Allah and fear Him. Seek the means of approach (al-waseelah) to Him, and strive hard in His cause as much as you can. So that you may be successful." (5:35)

The means to draw near to Allah is good action and worship, and should be done in accordance with the Quran and the Sunnah. Seeking means not specified by Quran and Sunnah is not permitted and can, and does, lead to major deviations in Islamic faith, like grave worship for one example.

To put it succinctly, RIGHTEOUS ACTIONS ALONE ARE THE WASEELAH WHICH DRAW ONE CLOSER TO ALLAH

When is an action a righteous action?

As per the Islamic sources, for an action to be a 'righteous action' and to be acceptable to Allah it must fulfil two important conditions:

1) The intention of the person doing it must be sincerely for the sake of Allah.

2) It must be in accordance with what Allah prescribed in Quran and the Prophet explained in his Sunnah
