The pillars of Islam

Islam has these five pillars. Of course normally you would expect four pillars for any structure; however here one pillar is not mandatory subject to conditions.

1) Testimony of faith:
The Muslim should declare before the world that “There is only one worthy of worship, and Muhammad is his messenger”.

2) Prayer
The Muslim should pray compulsorily the five ceremonial prayers daily.

3) Fasting:
The Muslim should fast for the entire month of Ramadan (29 or 30 days depending on the sighting of moon)

4) Zakat:
The Muslim should pay compulsory religious tax for the poor called Zakat.

5) Pilgrimage:
The Muslim should perform pilgrimage at Makkah if he/she is physically and financially able during the month of Dul-Hijjah. This requirement is waived if, and only if, one is not able to do so.

Prophet Muhammad said: "Islam is built upon five pillars: testifying that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing the prayers, giving the zakaat, making the pilgrimage to the House and fasting the month of Ramadan" (Bukhari, Muslim)
