Purity (Tahaarah)

Islam gives great importance for cleanliness and purity. In fact Prohet Muhammad said: "Cleanliness is half of faith" (Muslim). Especially Muslims are required to be clean in preparation for ritual prayers, and should remove or be free of any attribute from one's body and clothes that will prevent them from performing prayers.

Quran says: "Allah does not want to place you in difficulty, but He wants to purify you. (5:6)"

"For Allah loves those who turn to Him constantly and He loves those who keep themselves pure and clean." (2: 222).

"He caused rain to descend on you from heaven, to purify yourselves therewith" (Al-Anfaal 11)

Impurities should be removed by washing that part well with purifying water or other other appropriate manner.Agreed upon impurities include blood, urine, faeces, seminal fluid, menstrual or postpartum blood, prostatic fluid etc. Mud found in the street, small amount of blood or pus etc are pardoned.

Also one is permitted and in fact encouraged to fulfill one's instinctive traits to clean oneself by means like

a) Brushing one's teeth - This is recommended particularly while rising from sleep, when one's breath smell has changed and before the ritual prayers.

b) Removing the pubic hairs, underarm hairs, trimming the moustaches, trimming the nails etc.

c) Oil one's hair, dye the grey hair, use perfume etc etc. However it is not allowed to shave only parts of hairs as it is considered mutilation.

d) Circumcision for males - this is also medically highly recommended as circumcision in males will keep the private part clean from filth and urine.
