How to perform Wudu
It is recommended to clean the teeth with a tooth-stick or tooth brush
before performing ablution. In fact Prophet Muhammad said: "If
I had not felt that it would be difficult for my people I would have ordered
them to use a tooth-stick with every prayer."
1. Start by making niyyah (intention) to perform wudu and cleanse the
self of impurities.
2. Say bismillah ("In the Name of Allah").
3. Wash the right hand up to the wrist (and between the fingers) three
times, then similarly for the left hand. Make sure that no part of the
hands is left dry. Repeat this for the left hand.

4. Rinse the mouth and spit out the water three times. Optionally rub
the teeth with a Miswak (a natural toothbrush from twigs of arak tree).
If Miswak is not available then one can use the fore finger.

5. Optionally gently put water into the nostrils with the right hand,
and clean it with your left hand. This is performed three times.
6. Wash the face (from the hairline on the forehead to where facial hair
begins and ear to ear). This is to be performed three times. Make sure
that no part of the face is left dry.

7. Wash the entire right arm, including the hand, up to and including
the elbow three times; then the left arm three times. Make sure that no
part of the hands is left dry.

8. Then perform Masah (anointing). Wet the hands and wipe with the palms
over the head, first from front to the back and then from back to the
front once.

This action should be done only once.
9. Then (not necessarily wetting the hands again), insert the index fingers
in the ears and drive the thumb behind the ears (junction between ear
and the head) from bottom to the top in a circular motion.

10. Wash both feet, starting with the right foot, from the toes up to
and including the ankles thrice. Make sure that no part of the feet, including
between the fingers, is left dry.

11. Optionally recite the supplication
(see next page)

Note:
1) Each step of ablution can be done once, twice or three times (except
wiping of head and cleaning ears, which are to be done only once each)
2) Facility in ablution
If one wears socks after ablution, then one can simply wipe over the
socks with wet hands during further ablutions afterwards, without having
to remove the socks each time. This can be done for 24 hours from the
time of ablution, and for 3 days if the person is on a journey.
Also, if there is a wound in the body which cannot be washed for medical
reasons, then it is permissible simply to wipe the dressing of the wound
with a wet hand.
